We started a tradition several years ago with Christmas books. We wrap 12 Christmas books (one day we'll do it for 24 days) and put them under the tree. Each night, as a family, we unwrap one of the books and read the story before bed. It really helps to set the atmosphere for the season and it's something we get to do as a "family."
So it wasn't a huge expense to start, the first year we purchased one book and then checked out the rest from the library. Each year, we add on by purchasing a new book for our collection. Also, my kids have received books from their grandparents to add to the collection.
Some of the books we have now are:
I Spy Christmas, photographs by Walter Wick
Christmas Oranges, retold by Linda Bethers
A Night without Darkness-A Nephite Christmas story, written by Timothy Robinson
The Spirit of Christmas by Nancy Tillman
The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck
Penny's Christmas Jar Miracle by Jason Wright
The Tale of Three Trees retold by Angela Elwell Hunt
Some that have been suggested by friends are:
Snowmen at Night
A Gift for the Christ Child
Polar Express
Gingerbread boy by Jan Brett
The Nutcracker
