This is one of my favorite traditions. It's based on the book, "Christmas Jars" by Jason Wright. The basic idea is that you take a jar and sit it somewhere where you will see it often. Then, each day you fill the jar with your change. When Christmas comes, you find a family that is in need, and anonymously give them the jar.
We have our jar sitting on our kitchen counter. My mom made us our jar for a Christmas a couple years ago. We've decided not to give the original jar, but we transfer the money to another jar or gift card so we can keep this one for sentimental reasons.
It's not exactly easy to fill the jar each day because of debit cards these days, so we have to make an effort to remember to use as much cash as possible. The kids have fun filling it up and they know what it's for. So it's a family effort! It's allowed us the opportunity to help out family and friends over the past years and it reminds us year round that giving is more important than receiving.
